Everything is Under the Control of Jesus

Now in putting everything in subjection to him [Jesus], he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. Hebrews 2:8b
Do you enjoy a good mystery novel? The best books are the ones you can try to solve as you read along because the author unveils the clues like pieces of a puzzle. At first, the pieces don’t reveal much, but over time a picture starts to form. Even though the author knows the end, the reader is strategically introduced to the clues throughout the book. In some ways, this is how the Bible unfolds, as well. God knew from the beginning how His story would end and how our redemption and restoration would come to pass, but the story is slowly revealed to us in the lives of His people over time.
The author of Hebrews tells us that EVERYTHING was put under the authority of Jesus and NOTHING was left outside of His control. Like me, you might want to ask, “Why do bad things happen? Why is there so much pain and suffering? Why is life so hard? If Jesus is in control of everything, why can’t He just fix this situation?”
The author answers these questions in the next statement. “At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to Him.” God’s story is unfolding, but it has not yet been fully revealed or executed. We are further along than our biblical ancestors, but we are not yet at the end. We live in a fallen world, so suffering and pain and death are still part of our lives. However, the Bible tells us that one day God will fulfill all of His promises. His story will be complete and those who have put their faith in Him will spend eternity in heaven. There will be no more tears, no more suffering, and no more pain. Though we do not yet see or understand many things in our world, it is still absolutely true that EVERYTHING is under the control of Jesus. When we turn to Him, He will help us overcome. It’s ALL under His control.
Prayer: God, thank You that Jesus is in control of everything– even though I can’t always see it. Thank You for Your plan to restore everything and defeat Satan and evil in the world. Help me to trust You.
Journal: Have you ever thought about the Bible as one unified story? Why or why not? Is it hard to believe that everything is under the control of Jesus? What situations have made you doubt this truth? Ask God to help you trust Him—even when things are hard to experience or understand.
